No language has to stay foreign
Want to practise a language in real life, not in an app?
You only really learn a language once you speak it with a real person — an app gets you ready, but it won't start talking for you. Find a conversation partner in real life: a native speaker in your city, or a local when you're travelling. Timity cuts that down to minutes — set the language, share "a bit of Italian?", and someone nearby who likes the idea reaches out. You'll get more from an afternoon with a local than from a month in an app.
Why apps aren't enough
Streaks, flashcards, fill-in-the-gaps — all of it builds vocabulary, not speech. Speaking is a physical skill: rhythm, pauses, improvisation, the nerve to get a sentence wrong and put it right. You only train that in conversation, with someone waiting for your reply.
Where to find a real person
- Language exchanges (tandem). An hour split down the middle: half in your language, half in theirs. Fair, and free.
- Foreigners in your city. Students and expats often crave local contact more than you crave their language.
- Anyone, when you're travelling. The waiter, the stallholder, a fellow passenger — short exchanges count. Ten minutes a day face to face beats an hour with an app.
How to get to the first sentence
Don't book a conversation class — arrange a coffee. In Timity you set the language you're learning and share a few words: "a bit of Italian?" or "practise Czech over coffee?". Whoever nearby fancies it — a native speaker, or a learner like you — reaches out; you recognise each other by your sign, and the talking starts. No registration; only the people around you can see you, and only while you're sharing.
Give yourself permission to get it wrong
The point of a conversation isn't perfection — it's understanding each other. Native speakers don't mind mistakes; what matters to them is that someone's talking to them. Every botched sentence said out loud beats a perfect one in your head.
